Privacy policy

In short

• No accounts, no advertising, no third-party trackers and no cookies.
• We run our own analytics to learn which pages and features people use. It relies on a random ID stored in your browser, not on your IP address, and we never store your IP address.
• Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked before that ID is stored. Browsers that send a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal are treated as having said no.
• We never sell or share personal information.

What stays in your browser

The place you choose (its name, coordinates and time zone), your reminder settings and, if analytics is allowed, a random visitor ID are saved in your browser’s local storage so the site remembers them. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them. Browser notifications are scheduled by your browser on your device.

Analytics we collect

When you use the site, your browser sends us small usage events: the page and the page you came from, how long the page was open, screen size, browser language and time zone, and actions such as choosing a place, changing reminder settings, subscribing to the calendar or sending a message. When you choose a place we record its name and its coordinates rounded to about 10 km. Each event carries the random visitor ID (if allowed) and a session ID that lives only until you close the tab.

Our hosting provider looks up an approximate location (country, region and city) from your IP address when the event arrives; we store that approximate location and the browser, operating system and device type from your browser’s user agent. The IP address itself is used only in memory, to derive the location and to limit abuse, and is not stored.

We also log page requests from known search-engine and AI crawlers, identified by their user agent, to understand how the site is indexed. These records contain no personal information.

We use this information only to understand and improve the site. It is not used for advertising or to identify you.

Messages you send us

If you use the contact form, we store your message, the name and email address you give (both optional), the page you sent it from, the time, your approximate location and the visitor ID if one is set. We use them only to read and answer your message.

Other services your browser talks to

• Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) receives the coordinates of the place you choose to return the weather, cloud and UV forecast, and the text you type into the place search.
• BigDataCloud (bigdatacloud.com) receives your device’s coordinates, only when you tap “Use my location”, to look up the place name.
• Google Fonts serves the typefaces used on the site.

Like any web request, these receive your IP address and handle it under their own privacy policies.

Where the data is kept, and for how long

Pages and the calendar feed are served by Vercel. Analytics events and messages are stored on servers we operate in the United States. Analytics events are deleted after 13 months. Messages are kept until we have dealt with them and deleted within 12 months. The calendar feed is generated on request from the details in its link and is not stored. Our hosting providers keep standard request logs, which include IP addresses, for a limited period for security and operations.

Your choices and rights

You can clear the visitor ID at any time by clearing this site’s data, withdraw consent from the link at the bottom of any page, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser. Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, or to object to how we use it. Because we do not know who you are, please tell us the visitor ID shown under “Privacy choices” at the bottom of any page, or the email address you wrote from, through the contact form. Where the GDPR applies, we rely on your consent for the visitor ID and on our legitimate interest in running and improving the site for the rest; you may also complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and ask again where the law requires it.
