Privacy policy

In short

• No accounts, no advertising, no ad networks and no third-party trackers.
• We run our own analytics to learn which pages and features people use. It uses first-party cookies set by magichournow.com: xvr, a session cookie that ties a page request to the analytics beacon on that page, and, outside the EU, EEA and UK, xv, a random visitor ID kept for 13 months. We never store your IP address in clear text, only as a keyed hash.
• Visitors in the EU, EEA and UK get no persistent analytics cookie: their visitor ID lives only for the browser session, so we do not ask for consent. The older random ID in local storage is still only saved after visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland agree. Browsers that send a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal are treated as having said no.
• We never sell or share personal information.

What stays in your browser

The place you choose (its name, coordinates and time zone), your reminder settings and, if analytics is allowed, a random visitor ID are saved in your browser’s local storage so the site remembers them. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them. If you have not chosen a place, the home page starts with the approximate city our hosting provider derives from your IP address; that lookup is not logged or stored, and the result is not saved in your browser. Browser notifications are scheduled by your browser on your device.

Two first-party cookies are also set for analytics. xvr holds a random ID for the current page request, so the page view reported by the analytics script can be matched to the request our server saw; it is deleted when you close the browser. xv holds a random visitor ID and expires after 13 months. If you are in the EU, the EEA or the UK, xv is not set: a session cookie xvc tells the analytics script to keep the visitor ID in your browser’s session storage instead, and it is gone when you close the browser. None of these cookies contains personal information, and none is shared with anyone else. Clearing this site’s cookies removes them.

Analytics we collect

When you use the site, your browser sends us small usage events: the page and the page you came from, how long the page was open, screen size, browser language and time zone, and actions such as choosing a place, changing reminder settings, subscribing to the calendar or sending a message. When you choose a place we record its name and its coordinates rounded to about 10 km. Each event carries the random visitor ID (if allowed) and a session ID that lives only until you close the tab.

Our hosting provider looks up an approximate location (country, region and city) from your IP address when the event arrives; we store that approximate location and the browser, operating system and device type from your browser’s user agent. The IP address itself is used in memory to derive the location and an internet-provider network, to tell automated traffic from people and to limit abuse. It is stored only as a keyed hash, never in clear text, and the hash cannot be turned back into the address.

We also log page requests from known search-engine and AI crawlers, identified by their user agent, to understand how the site is indexed. These records contain no personal information.

We use this information only to understand and improve the site. It is not used for advertising or to identify you.

Messages you send us

If you use the contact form, we store your message, the name and email address you give (both optional), the page you sent it from, the time, your approximate location and the visitor ID if one is set. We use them only to read and answer your message.

Other services your browser talks to

• Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) receives the coordinates of the place shown to return the weather, cloud and UV forecast, and the text you type into the place search.
• BigDataCloud (bigdatacloud.com) receives your device’s coordinates, only when you tap “Use my location”, to look up the place name.
• Google Fonts serves the typefaces used on the site.

Like any web request, these receive your IP address and handle it under their own privacy policies.

Where the data is kept, and for how long

Pages and the calendar feed are served by Vercel. Analytics events and messages are stored on servers we operate in the United States. Analytics events are processed by our own analytics service, visit-center, on the same servers; individual events are deleted after 13 months at most, and only daily totals are kept longer. Messages are kept until we have dealt with them and deleted within 12 months. The calendar feed is generated on request from the details in its link and is not stored. Our hosting providers keep standard request logs, which include IP addresses, for a limited period for security and operations.

Your choices and rights

You can clear the visitor ID at any time by clearing this site’s data, withdraw consent from the link at the bottom of any page, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser. Browsers that the site owner has marked from the admin page are excluded from analytics entirely. Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, or to object to how we use it. Because we do not know who you are, please tell us the visitor ID shown under “Privacy choices” at the bottom of any page, or the email address you wrote from, through the contact form or at support@magichournow.com. Where the GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interest in running and improving the site; you may also complain to your local data protection authority.
